Gabions are a beautiful way to add structure or privacy to a spacious, open garden. It is the ideal solution for bank stabilisation, retaining walls, embankments, erosion control, and more. The name gabion comes from Italian “gabbione” meaning "big cage". The design is simple, yet functional and aesthetically appealing. A cage, cylinder, or box is filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, military applications and landscaping.
Wire containers or baskets are linked together like building blocks and filled neatly with the chosen material. In the case of landscaping and architecture with goal is also esthetics. The choice of stone and the way the rocks are filled plays an important role in how the final result will look. Gabions are powerful barriers and once in place, it needs little to no maintenance.
Apart from walls, their uses stretch as far as the landscaper’s imagination. From containers for plants like succulents, stepping stones in ponds, garden benches, to focus walls for water-features.
